Recap: DP's 2008 Fall Showcase

By: Austin Alexander-November 10, 2008

dp_logo1.pngAnother Diamond Prospects event is in the books and a number of new names emerged as "players to follow" when we spin it forward. On Saturday and Sunday, DP serviced 190 players as part of our 3rd Unsigned Senior and Fall Underclassman Showcase at Blythewood High School in Columbia.

A solid showing of college coaches and pro scouts were on hand to take in the Saturday workouts, followed by the games. The weather more than cooperated on both days as we narrowly escaped a Friday night storm and cool temps dropped upon us when the lights came on. But, the majority of the two days were soaked in sunlight and filled with baseball players trying to pave their way in the sport we all love.

ridgwayj07.jpgHighlights: Atlanta Braves reliever Jeff Ridgway (right) conducted a very inspirational chat with the masses and Columbia Blowfish skipper Tim Medlin served as a valuable source of future info when he executed the Recruiting 101 spill. This showcase also introduced "The Fungo Man" to most scouts, coaches and patrons as it shot precise groundballs to each infield position at a rapid rate!

And while we had all of these outside sources contributing to a successful Saturday, it boiled down to the performances between the lines that became the drawing card among evaluators.

Among seniors, Stratford's Ryan Gunther shot bolts in the upper-80's and Cheraw's Gray Stafford improved his stock as a position player too. A handful of other guys also commanded notice with their efforts.

Easley sophomore Joey Pankake (left) once again showcased his skills in the field and at the plate, he also showed off on the bump as well. York junior Josh Greene flashed the top 60 time and Gilbert freshman Austin LaBounty (right) landed squarely on the radar with his overall performance over the two days.

We have compiled all of the 60 times, peak velocities and all pop times for each participant. We'll also rank all of the tools and top prospects... To view, click here.
