As the temperatures rose on Sunday, so did the interest levels of the 30+ scouts (right) over the talent that was assembled at Diamond Prospects’ second pre-season Pro Day. AC Flora High School played host to 75 of the Palmetto State’s top players from the 2008, 2009 and 2010 classes and these young men did not disappoint.
Laurens junior Travis Burnside (6.56) narrowly edged out White Knoll’s Adam Matthews (6.58), pictured right, in the 60-yard dash, they were two of eleven players that turned in a sub-7.0 time in the race. During the defensive portion, Summerville’s Patrick Dolan wowed everyone with his bolts from the outfield, Gilbert’s Christopher Owings silky smooth actions and arm at shortstop grabbed attention, then Boiling Springs catcher Jeffrey Campbell put on a clinic with his quick release and strong arm behind the dish.
Quality talent + AC Flora’s outfield dimensions + batting practice = baseball’s never to be seen again! We certainly lost our share of balls on Sunday but were privileged to a very fine display of BP from some of South Carolina’s top hitters. Leading the way, in no particular order, were Carolina Forest’s John Gump, Lancaster’s Nick Ferguson, Riverside’s Michael Roth, Midland Valley’s Cody McElhaney, Wando’s Daniel Aldrich and Matthews…just to name a few.
And then the bullpens! The final portion of the event truly threw an exclamation point on the day as one quality arm after another toed the rubber. In all, 19 guys landed in the 87-91 range led by Blythewood’s Richard Mounce, Byrnes’ Joseph Moorefield and Gaffney sophomore Tyler Wilson (left). Five other tenth graders topped out in the upper-80’s leaving evaluators with a promising feeling about the future in our state.
Many of these same players will come together again this August 16-17 at USC’s Sarge Frye Field as part of DP’s first invite-only, two-day regional tournament. This day served as a preview of that event!
We have taken the past two days to list every 60 time, every pop time and each pitcher’s top bolt. We also list the premier prospects in each position and will rank the top professional prospects in every class. To view info from DP's marquee event, click here.
DP Note: We’d like to extend our thanks to AC Flora and Head Coach Andy Hallett for opening their doors to us for a beautiful day for baseball!.
