Recap: South Atlantic Border Battle

By: Austin Alexander - October 31-November 1

Host teams roll to four wins in first Border Battle

cofc-ballpark209.jpgPerfect weather in Charleston greeted some of the top talent from Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina for the first South Atlantic Border Battle. southatlanticborderbattle09.jpgPremier players in the junior and senior classes from these three states collided at Patriots Point for a two-day exhibition in front of a solid showing of college coaches and pro scouts.

After a very quick opener, plenty of offense became the theme for the remainder of the event as runs paraded across the plate in bulk over the next five contests.

borderbattlesc11s.jpgEach club took two rounds of batting practice before their first game, one with wood, the other with aluminum. It could be said that their third round of BP lasted for 14 innings per team. Though there was a surplus of quality pitchers that toed the slab, the College of Charleston's ballpark huffmanj-stanceapr08.jpgdid nothing to lose its reputation as a hitter's paradise!

Some stellar performances of note came from the arm and bat of LSU commit Jake Cave (VA 2011), Florida commit Joshua Tobias (NC 2011), C of C commit Jared Huffman (SC 2011, right) and uncommitted junior from Sumter Bruce Caldwell.

This event will also be remembered for a high volume of balls that were lost in the sun or high sky...and the emergence of gnats on Saturday that had fans swatting "no see'ums" for much of the day!

Stay tuned to DP as we break down the games that South Carolina teams participated in while logging prospect info on some of the top performers...
